This mysterious man first appears to the Hana-gumi as Kuroki Satan, one of the four Death Heaven Lords of the Kuronosukai organization. He is the only member of the organization to demonstrate any ambition other then furthering Tenkai's aim of restoring the Shogunate to power.

Several months after the defeat of Tenkai, Satan returns as Aoi Satan, head of the Kouma, he reveals his goal to be nothing short of seeing every human die a slow and painful death. And of course at the end of the game is true nature is reveiled.

Satan is resurected at the start of the second game, to challange the Hana-gumi once again, it is then that he is finally revealed to be Shinnosuke Yamazaki, former member of the Tai Kouma Butai, after his last battle with the Hana-gumi is killed once more by Oni Ou, and has not returned since.

In the TV series Satan's personality and story are changed significantly, his true identiy is revealed much sooner, much to the dismay of Kouran who idolizes Yamazaki for designing the Koubu. In the TV series he is the leader of the Kuronosukai who's objective is to revive Tenkai, in order to seize power for themselves. Yamazaki's belief is that the Japanese goverment betrayed him, and made him weak by refusing to build the Spirit Armour he designed. And Yamazaki is determined not to be weak or rely on others, and so he creates the Kuronosukai so he can have the power he feels he nees.
